Chapter 9 Big Metaphor: Abuelita’s blanket

In Chapter 9 we will  continue to work on interpreting big metaphors that help us understand the themes in Esperanza Rising. In Chapter 8, we focused on the rosebush and kittens as big metaphors. We also discussed the earth's heartbeat and the river between Esperanza and Miguel.

In this chapter, we will practice working with another “big metaphor” that runs through the book: Abuelita’s blanket

Your Task:

Please read: Pages 12-15 and Page 51

As you read, consider these questions:

Is Abuelita’s blanket a metaphor? For what?

What big idea (theme) of the book is related to the blanket?

Remember that in any discussion of a text, we need to support our statements with evidence.

You could start your statement by saying “One reason I think this is . . .” or “The evidence is . . .” and “I believe this because the book says . . .”
